Joseph 'Squizzy' Taylor
He started off with small crimes like pick pocketing but then moved on to bigger things such as bank robberies, murders and prostitution. Taylor started his working life at the age of 18 as a jockey, but he was soon to be charged for assault. He is a personality because of his misdeeds and because he was a main figure in the underworld of Melbourne in the early 1900’s. He claimed the name ‘Squizzy’ for his left eyelid. His left eyelid was said to be droopy and people proclaimed it was very twitchy, therefore he got the name Squizzy. He was shot by a Sydney gangster in a gunfight. His name was John Daniel ‘Snowy’ Cutmore. This gunfight occurred in Carlton in 1927, he soon died on the 27th of October 1927 in Fitzroy hospital.
